My Basic Ramblings: I was all excited to see this movie. Why, you may ask. Because even though I'm not big on icky gory slashy horror movies, the first flick was funny and original (and suspenseful) enough to make me a fan. Plus, Jerry O'Connell was going to be in the sequel, and he is high on the List O'Crushes.
So we (my friends Jeff and Cathy and I)go to see the movie.
I've thought about it for a few days (I went to see it on Saturday and it's now Tuesday) and my one thought is "Eh." It could have been so, so much better. There's an early draft of the screenplay drifting around on the web (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Set/3827/s2.txt) that I feel is much better (freakier, creepier, depressinger).
But now on to Jerry O'Connell and this is a major part of the reason why this movie rates an "Eh" with me. He can't act! And what's up with those weird wrinkles around his mouth? And that bursting into "I Think I Love You" in the cafeteria (in what seemed like a horrific off-keyness)? And right after Sarah Michelle Gellar's killed, when Sid goes back into the frat house to get her coat, he doesn't, like, well, stay with her? Nooooooooo, he's much rather just stand out on the porch like a doofus. I was actually kinda relieved when he got shot.
None of the new characters really made much of an impression on me - at the fateful scene, when the killer removed his mask, here are my thoughts, in order:
But the biggest reason why the movie just didn't do it for me is poor Randy. The most likeable character of the series (Gale's too bitchy, Dewey's annoying, Sid's too tortured) and they off him. I don't get it. Sigh. Meanwhile, Dewey gets stabbed about eighteen thousand times, sits bleeding in a sound studio room for what seems like hours, and he lives. I know they muttered something about "hitting scar tissue", but still.
On the bright side, I liked Cotton Weary (Liev What's-His-Face, Schriebner-Shribner-Shriner). He's cute in a goofy sorta way. Maybe he can join the List of Crushes. I gotta see what other movies he's been in.
